Changing the filter on your furnace probably isn’t something you think about too often. It may be on your list right next to cleaning the baseboards or reorganizing the shed (you know: the stuff you never actually get around to). However, not replacing your filter regularly can actually shorten the life of your furnace — and it’s faster and easier than cleaning out your shed!

Here at Comfort Pros Heating and Cooling, we can’t emphasize the importance of this single task enough. We offer furnace repair and many other HVAC services throughout Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs, and we’d be happy to help you today. In fact, you can get started with a free quote. Keep reading to learn more about furnace filters, and then contact us today if you’re in need of furnace repair, furnace replacement, or heating services.

Check Your Filter

First things first: check out that filter, figure out if it needs replacing, and make sure you know what model it is!

You’ll begin by turning off the furnace and removing the existing furnace filter, which should be inside the furnace or the return air vent. The filter should have an arrow noting the airflow direction. Mark this on the furnace or take a photo so you know which way to install the filter later.

Tip: If your filter has a plastic frame instead of a cardboard frame, then it’s reusable! You can clean it with a vacuum and water, let it dry completely, and then place it in your furnace once again. We recommend doing this outside so that the debris and dust don’t settle in your home.

Get the Right Replacement

The cardboard frame of the filter will say what size it is. Visit a hardware or home store, call your local furnace repair company, or shop online for a filter that matches those specifications.

Install the New Filter

And, finally, install the new filter! Remember to install it the correct way by looking at the markings you made or the photo you took. Slide the filter into place and replace any cover it may have had. Write the current date down or set a reminder in your phone so you know exactly when you next need to replace it.

When to Replace Your Furnace Filter

Most filters need to be replaced monthly, although this will depend on the type of filter you use.

Tip: Hold the filter up to the light. If you can clearly see light, then you’re OK. If you can’t see light clearly, then it’s probably time to replace your furnace filter.

Why to Replace Your Furnace Filter

Most furnace repair and furnace service can actually be avoided by regularly changing your filter. By not changing your filter, airflow can’t move through it as easily and your furnace will likely overheat and then shut down — and then you’re left calling us for furnace repair! While we’re always more than happy to come over for home heating repair, it’s easy to avoid costly repairs by simply replacing your filter regularly.
